HB 170 Comment: Representative Sullivan - Missoula County opposes HB 170: Repeal state energy policy. This bill entirely repeals the state’s energy policy statements without replacement and removes the requirement for the Energy and Telecommunications Interim Committee to review the policy each interim.
The current policy has been law for 30 years and has been amended with bipartisan support multiple times. Repealing it would create a dangerous vacuum of guidance that would be vulnerable to individual exploitation. Additionally, HB 170 could negatively impact the County’s clean energy and carbon neutrality goals. The current policy should be left alone to continue successfully guiding Montana through the evolution of energy development, technologies and markets.
