Missoula County opposes HB 328: Require certain government boards to record public meetings in audio and video format, up for hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m. in the House Local Government committee.
Missoula County staff currently upload recordings and transcriptions of public meetings in a timely manner. This bill would shorten the required time for government boards, including commissions, to upload both audio and video files of public meetings to their website within one business day. Discrepancies in recording technology occasionally lead to technical difficulties with video or audio recording, and purchasing back-up systems for redundancy would be costly. While Missoula County supports efforts to increase transparency and public engagement in government proceedings, this tight time requirement is likely to encumber staff, especially those in smaller jurisdictions.
