Missoula County supports SJ 22, Joint resolution to study public transportation, up for hearing Tuesday in Highways and Transportation. Thank you for sponsoring this resolution.
With the recent population boom in our state that is expected to continue, it's time for the Legislature to play a more active role in charting Montana’s transportation future through establishing an interim committee to investigate enhanced passenger transportation service across the state. As Montana’s third-most populated county, Missoula County has a keen interest in not only examining new models for re-establishing passenger rail service to southern Montana, which we’ve been without for nearly 40 years, but also examining how our various modes of existing and emerging public transportation throughout the region can better serve residents and visitors alike.
Also, in a time when retrenchment is always a possibility, it’s critical to take proactive steps to retain existing transportation options throughout rural Montana, such as Amtrak’s Empire Builder along the Hi-Line. An interim committee of the Legislature is an ideal avenue to accomplish this goal and puts the legislative branch of Montana government in the driver’s seat of the conversation.
