Missoula County opposes SB 272: Constitutional amendment to secure the office of county sheriff, up for hearing at 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, in the Senate Judiciary Committee. SB 272 attempts to remove the sheriff from local government partnership at the county level, which will make important work like detention center operations, budget discussions and public safety more complicated and difficult to administer.
Counties and sheriffs work together on numerous projects. For example, in Montana, detention centers are partnerships where county commissioners are required to complete yearly safety inspections of detention centers, while the sheriff’s office provides for the detention center’s daily operation.
